Before & After To-Dos

Before Vasectomy

  • Stop taking aspirin and/or blood thinners one week prior to vasectomy date

  • Arrange for someone to give you a ride home after the procedure (this CANNOT be Uber or Lyft)

  • Wear comfortable clothes and snug fitting briefs or an athletic supporter (jock strap)

  • Eat no more than a light snack prior to the vasectomy

After Vasectomy

  • Take it easy for the first few days

  • No heavy lifting or straining for one week

  • Wear snug cotton briefs or an athletic supporter for the 1st week

  • Can apply an ice pack or frozen peas to the scrotum for the first few hours to reduce swelling

  • You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol), or Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) to relieve any discomfort.

  • It is normal to have some bruising/discoloration around the vasectomy site

  • You can take showers immediately. Avoid baths or swimming the first week

  • If  skin sutures are placed, they do not have to be removed. They will dissolve in about a week.

  • Remember you still need to utilize some form of birth control until a semen analysis confirms no sperm present at 3 months. It is also recommended to have at least 20 ejaculations to clear any residual sperm. You can resume sexual activity in 5-7 days.

  • You will be given a semen collection container to submit the semen analysis to the office at no charge
